How fast do electric bikes go?

The speed that regular bikes can go relies on how much energy you put on a pedal. You can be fast or extra slow, depending on the effort you put into the bike. You have full control of your speed, and you can easily navigate when cycling using regular bikes.

However, in terms of electric bikes, how fast do electric bikes go? Electronic bikes are programmed for a specific maximum speed. While ebikes are capable of traveling as fast as you like, that doesn't mean they're required to travel at such speeds. Speed restrictions vary in the US but are generally limited to 20 mph (32 km/h) on Class 1 and 2 ebikes. Class 3 ebikes are limited to 28 mph (45 km/h).

An average electric bike can be as fast as 20mph. However, electric bikes can only go as fast as 28mph and do not go more than this figure. Even the most powerful electric bikes will only limit the motor to 28mph. The motor stops supporting you when you reach the max speed limitation. The bottom line, you have the power to reach a speed that is suitable for your own style of riding. You can push your own limits to go faster than the maximum supported speed, or you can rely on the motor to keep you rolling at speeds within the maximum support level.

Whether or not an ebike in each of these classes can reach its permitted electric bike top speed depends on the payload it is carrying and its motor output. The maximum speed of an ebike will be relative to both its payload and the power output of its motor, but, in most cases, with just you on your ebike, you’ll be able to reach the class limits placed upon it.

People's assumptions about bike speed vary, imagining that everyone is going to be whizzing around at 60+mph, to not-too-fast-at-all, and kind of pointless. In fact, most ebikes are not designed for high speeds, but rather for assistance in achieving and sustaining higher speeds, carrying goods, or enabling the freedom of biking for those who might not be able to do it under their own power.

How fast an ebike can go depends on the size of its motor. Almost every ebike you’ll see in the USA is capable of exceeding the speeds it is limited to. It is common to see ebikes categorized regarding their speed and functionalities using a tier system of three classes:

Class 1: Electric bikes that are pedal-assist only, with a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.

Class 2: Electric bikes that also have a maximum speed of 20 mph, The difference is that Class 2 bikes have the drive system activated by a throttle.

Class 3: Electric bikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.
