Do you have questions about preserving your electric bike's battery during the winter? In this article we will discuss how to store the battery of an e-bike in winter. Here are three points you should be aware of:
- Keep The Battery Clean Before Put Away
Remember you bike will sit for a few months and any leftover reside can cause corrosion. So make sure to wipe off any dirt. Avoid using a high pressure washer as electronics can get damaged, the best method is to use a damp cloth to wipe it down.
- Storage Your Battery In The Comfortable Environment
Your electric bike battery does not like extreme temperatures. Although your electric bike can be driven during winter months, avoid using the bike during excessive cold temperatures, which can damage the battery. If your ebike has a removable battery and the bike is going to be stored in a location where it will be exposed to very cold temperatures (ex. uninsulated garage), you should remove the battery and store it someplace with normal room temperatures (55-75 degrees Fahrenheit). With the electric bike’s battery stored, you can store an ebike any place you’d store a traditional bike.
If your bike doesn’t have a removable battery, then you should store the entire bike indoors.
- Keep Battery Charged
If your eBike is going to be stored for an extended period of time (30 days or more), the battery should be kept charged to around 50-70%. The battery should never be stored fully charged or fully drained. Both are hard on the battery and can decrease their life. Do not store a dead battery. You should check the battery every 2 months and charge it back up to that 50-70% range if necessary.
